• 5.0 out of 5 stars from copperwoman -- Waiting for the movie : Loved this book. A delicious literary Gumbo. And I cannot improve on the wonderful comments by others. Other than saying, HBO, Amazon Prime, calling all screenwriters. This needs to be extended beyond the page and put out into the visual world. That is just one of the many ways it came to life for me. And what a forceful, humorous, psychologically deep dive into a new American classic. I loved every moment and hard to believe this is a debut novel. Helping Howard by Sally Schloss IS new. New and inventive. As readers, we are privy to conversations between the author and her character, Howard, a guy who needs help! So does the author, it turns out, and this charming page-turner reveals the inevitable wounds and the hard-earned healing that make up life. Real life. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Nashville Reader -- Witty, Engaging, & Highly Entertaining : From the opening Author’s Note, when Sally Schloss, the actual author of this clever story states “This is a novel in which the main character, Howard, helps The Author write a book, and The Author in turn helps Howard understand his marriage,” I was hooked. This is creation at its finest, as Schloss moves seamlessly from dialogue between these two into the engaging, moving scenes the fictional Author creates to drive the story forward. Howard is a good man who does not always make wise choices (there goes that pesky Author, again). Inciteful and engaging, this is a book to be savored—one I’ll be reading again and again. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from JT -- Deep, witty, wise : I resisted this novel for the first few pages because I didn't like Howard. I didn't think he deserved to be helped! But the Author was much kinder and wiser than this reader. Soon enough, I sank deeper into the complex tapestry of relationships among all the interrelated families and characters created by the author Sally Schloss, who cleverly created a character of Author to help poor Howard in his quest for love and understanding. This is a gripping, poignant, deeply wise, and often funny tale of the messes we get ourselves into simply by being human. Equally compassionate and clever, this is a novel about why we are the way we are, our aching need to love and be loved, and our messy efforts to grow beyond our limitations. Schloss is a skillful writer who knows what she's doing. I'm eager to read more of her work. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2021 )

It is a perfect book for the holiday cuddle up from the cold or a mid-winter get away to the warmer climate or even a fall Saturday in the park. With loving nods to New York City, the best of film, literature and her Jewish culture, this page-turning and often surprising story moves the reader along, with growing sympathy for its characters and deepening understanding of the choices we all make in the interest of love- be it for a partner, a child or the characters we make up in our minds- about ourselves and others.
